About

A signature initiative of the Willmar Area Community Foundation, emPOWERED Non-profits Willmar is exactly what its namesake says. An initiative that serves as a catalyst for true and transformational change in our community.

The Launch of emPOWERED
Non-profits Willmar

This initiative was created in response to the strain on many of our non-profit partners caused by the pandemic. Many local non-profits were struggling with staff and volunteer shortages, organizational structure, and decreased revenue. While the overall capacity of our non-profit partners was stretched and tested, the demand for their services skyrocketed. The initiative has provided specialized training and 1:1 expert consultations to non-profit organizations located in the Kandiyohi County.

Training via Watch Parties and Workshop Sessions

Led by consultants with decades of experience, the initiative covers topics ranging from creating human resource policies, effective staff recognition and workplace drama to board governance, grant proposals, marketing, and leadership.

The watch parties are held at the WACF office where the webinars are hosted by organizations specialized in educating and supporting non-profits. The watch party sessions will be made up of an hour-long informational webinar and a 30-minute peer to peer discussion.

WACF reserves the right to postpone or reschedule an event if the minimum number of attendees has not been reached within the event registration deadline.

This service connects them with a skilled consultant who offers guidance on specific challenges they encounter. These sessions, lasting 45 minutes each and termed as 'office hours', incur no cost for our non-profit partners.

Should a non-profit and consultant identify a substantial project or a larger body of work requiring focused attention, they can request up to 10 hours of consulting time subsequent to the initial 'office hours' intake visit. WACF will evaluate each request to determine the feasibility of allocating project consulting time to the non-profit partner.

What Our Non-profits Say

“The value has been me thinking outside the box and rethinking ways to do things differently. I’ve been in my role for 8 years  and sometimes get in a rut so “sparking” new ideas is always good. I also enjoy the conversation with our local non-profits after the webinars. This helps clarify some of my questions I had during the webinar and bring it more locally too.”

Alana Ziehl

Executive Director

Kandiyohi County Food Shelf

"Thanks for providing these trainings and resources to us. We have an office of 2 and have public hours that need to be covered. It is so convenient to be able to take a couple hours to come to the event instead of having to be gone for one whole day with travel. It is also nice to watch the trainings with other non-profit leaders and get to know them. It is so helpful to bounce ideas off of each other, share our experiences and learn from each other as well."

"emPOWERED Non-Profits Willmar has been invaluable for Advocacy and Inclusion Matters of West Central Minnesota (AIM). AIM doesn’t belong to state or national organizations. The local training options through emPOWERED have been an educational resource for AIM. All Kandiyohi County non-profits benefit from the trainings and consultants provided by emPOWERED. AIM is excited to learn more through emPOWERED to advance their knowledge and vision for future growth.
